Already facing a season full of disappointments, the LSU Tigers (15-13) headed into Saturday’s showdown with the #3 Florida Gators (25-4) looking to prove they had the ability to play with any team in the country, and their 66-56 victory may have convinced many of their skeptics.
The Tigers trailed 2-0 in the beginning stages of the game and after that they never had to chase the Gators. They went on an 11-2 run to grab a 16-6 advantage in the first five minutes and ended the first half with a 34-21 lead.
Florida, usually a strong rebounding team, was dominated on the glass as LSU finished with 13 more boards than the SEC East champions. It was also an awful night shooting from beyond the three-point line for Florida, they connected on just 2-17 attempts.
Terry Martin finished with 18 points for the Tigers and Garrett Temple ended his night with 17 points and 8 rebounds. LSU shot 51 percent from the floor and played solid defense despite missing their star big man Glen Davis.
For the Tigers to reach the NCAA Tournament they will have to win the SEC Tournament. The win moved LSU to 4-10 in the SEC West while Florida fell to 12-2 in the SEC East.
Al Horford led the Gators with 13 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.
