In a game that went back and forth it was the #12 Georgetown Hoyas (22-5) that managed to hold a late fourth quarter lead and beat the #10 Pittsburgh Panthers (24-5) 61-53.
The Hoyas got 17 points from Jonathan Wallace and Jeff Green added 14 points and 4 rebounds in the win. More impressive than their offensive statistics was the Hoyas defensive effort. Georgetown held the Panthers to just 32 percent shooting and blocked 7 shots. Pittsburgh could get little going down low and were forced to continue shooting from the perimeter, a game-plan that didn’t favor the nation’s number ten team.
Georgetown was able to settle down after Pittsburgh jumped to a 47-41 lead midway through the second half and found a pace conducive to their style to take the lead for good with just over three minutes remaining. Pounding the ball down low and getting to the foul-line proved to be the perfect solution for the Hoyas attack.
While Pittsburgh managed to attempt 20 more shots than the Hoyas it was Georgetown who had 13 more free-throw attempts. Georgetown’s ability to hit 75 percent of their foul-shots compared to a 50 percent clip from the Panthers was the difference in the game.
The win was Georgetown’s eleventh in a row and improved their record to 12-2 in the Big East. They now lead the conference by a game over the Panthers who fell to 11-3.
