The Maryland Terrapins (22-7) moved closer to an NCAA Tournament birth with an 89-87 victory over the #5 North Carolina Tar Heels (24-5) on Sunday.
With a career-high 27 points from D.J. Strawberry and Mike Jones adding 18 points the Terrapins were able to overcome a 12-point deficit in the second half and overtake the ACC leading Tar Heels.
North Carolina had their chance to force overtime but Brandon Wright missed both free-throws with 3.5 seconds remaining. Wright’s second miss was intentional but the Tar Heels were unable to corral the rebound.
The Tar Heels inability to grab the rebound was no surprise, as the Terrapins had a 47-32 advantage on the glass.
Wright wasn’t the only Tar Heel who struggled from the line, as a team N.C shot 50 percent from the foul-line. Tyler Hansbrough led the Tar Heels with 22 points.
Maryland improved to 8-6 in the ACC while North Carolina dropped to 10-4. The Tar Heels are now tied atop the ACC with Virginia and Virginia Tech.
