Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role goes to Alan Arkin in “Little Miss Sunshine.”

Alan Arkin was presented with an Oscar Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in “Little Miss Sunshine.”

The announcement came as a surprise as many felt Eddie Murphy stood a great chance of earning his first Oscar for his role in “Dreamgirls.”

Arkin was up against a tough cast on nominees, Djimon Hounsou in “Blood Diamond,” Jackie Earle Haley in “Little Children,” Mark Wahlberg in “The Departed,” and Murphy.

It had been 38-years since Arkin was nominated for an Oscar. In 1969 Arkin was nominated for Best Actor in a Lead Role for “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.”
