The UK has refused the meet the demands of the Somali pirates who kidnapped a British couple sailing in the Indian Ocean, saying they would not pay the $7 million ransom for their release.
A statement made by a spokesman for the Foreign Office declared, “We are aware of reports that a ransom demand of $7m has been made. [Her Majesty's Government] HMG's policy remains clear: We will not make substantive concessions to hostage takers, including the payment of ransoms.”
It has been eight days since Paul and Rachel Chandler were kidnapped while traveling to Tanzania from the Seychelles. Family members have insisted the couple do not have such a substantial amount of money and they had put almost all their money into their yachting adventure.
The UK government has said they have not been in contact nor would they be in contact with the pirates, insisting will not make concessions to hostage takers.
