15 Bodies Discovered on Remote Ranch in Northern Mexico, Drug Gangs Suspected in Murders

The bodies of 15 people have been discovered on a remote ranch in Mexico’s northwestern state of Sonora.

While authorities have not officially linked the murders to drug gangs there were several signs pointing to such a conclusion; many of the bodies were riddled with bullet holes.

Among the dead was a prominent organizer of agricultural workers, Margarito Montes. Farm workers in Mexico are often pressured into growing illegal drugs by gangs. When rival gangs clash those farmers are often caught in the middle of the violence.

Mexico has made a push to halt the growing drug violence as President Felipe Calderon has deployed more than 45,000 security forces to tackle the problem but drug cartels.
