While the Philadelphia Phillies still have to play Game 3 of the 2009 World Series that hasn’t stopped manager Charlie Manuel from setting his rotation for Game 4 and 5 as he announced Joe Blanton would take the mound on Sunday and Cliff Lee would come back on Monday.
Manuel opted to give Lee his four days’ rest between outings, opening the door for Blanton to start on Sunday. The decision to start Blanton came down to Manuel’s belief that the Phillies bullpen would be better served if he kept left-handed starter J.A. Happ available for middle relief.
The Phillies are currently toed at a game apiece with the New York Yankees and will look to take an advantage in the series on Saturday night when Cole Hamels faces Andy Pettitte.
Philadelphia won Game 1 behind a complete game masterpiece from Lee but New York bounced back in Game 2 as A.J. Burnett tossed a gem to even the series.
Game 1 loser CC Sabathia is expected to start Game 4 for the Yankees.
