The AP Top 25 went through a bit of a shake-up this weekend after the USC Trojans and Oklahoma State Cowboys fell but one thing remains the same, the Florida Gators are still the number one team in the country, capturing 38 votes to retain their #1 spot this week.
While the Gators dismantled the Georgia Bulldogs and locked up the SEC East thanks to a South Carolina loss their rival in the SEC West, the Alabama Crimson Tide, dropped from #2 to #3 despite never playing a down. The Tide saw their #2 ranking taken by the Texas Longhorns who picked apart Oklahoma State and remain in perfect position for a BCS national championship berth.
The battle for #4 and #5 in the AP couldn’t have been closer as the Cincinnati Bearcats edged the Boise State Broncos by a single ballot. That shouldn’t shake the Broncos too much though as they got a boost from Oregon this weekend as they beat USC, adding further weight to their season opening win against the Ducks.
That loss dropped USC from #4 down to #12 and all but ended their hopes of a Pac 10 title and shot at a national championship. For TCU that shot still remains after they jumped two spots up to #6 this week and remain a popular team in the BCS rankings.
With their win over USC the Oregon Ducks jumped three spots to #7 and they are in great position for a Pac 10 championship and a Rose Bowl berth. They could be facing Iowa who didn’t exactly look impressive in their win over Indiana but they remain unbeaten and the Big Ten is theirs for the taking.
The LSU Tigers are still alive in the national title hunt as they held firm to their #9 ranking and if they could upset Alabama next week and win the SEC championship game they might get the bid for a title game appearance.
