Hamid Karzai Declared Afghan President after Second Round of Voting Scrapped

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has been declared the winner of the country’s recent presidential election after officials opted to scrap plans for a second round. That decision was made shortly after Karzai’s closest rival, Abdullah Abdullah, opted to remove himself from the vote.

Karzai secured an overwhelming majority in the election’s first round but evidence of wide-spread fraud quickly led to more than a third of his ballots being tossed. As a result Karzai’s majority dipped below the 50 percent mark which in turn forced a second round.

The move for a second round was welcomed by Abdullah but he demanded that the poll officials who oversaw the first round be removed to ensure a fair vote. That demand was dismissed by Karzai and as a result Abdullah refused to keep his name in the race, saying it would only serve to legitimize the vote and he did not feel the process was truly democratic.

Because Abdullah was the only other candidate in the second round his decision to step aside left Karzai as the unopposed candidate and led to his victory in the election.
