John Mauldin’s latest post,” Catching Argentinean Disease”, discusses the U.S. growing government fiscal deficit and massive future liabilities such as Medicare and Social Security. Further, Mauldin examines the economic history of Argentina and how it should be regarded to as an object lesson that all the resources in the world can be set at zero by financial mismanagement.
In Latin America hyperinflation is not a theoretical issue; it has been a reality. For many Latin Americans, the dollar has been their safe haven and now they are worried, with good reason. The main force in the economy right now is deflation.
The Fed will fight deflation tooth and nail but they don’t have to buy government debt to fight deflation. They can fight deflation without encourage the government to run massive deficits. Mauldin believes that as long as the Fed maintains its independence, the U.S. will not experience hyperinflation. To not maintain independence is to court economic disaster of the first order.
