Pittsburgh Penguins Add Experience and Strength before NHL Trading Deadline

The Pittsburgh Penguins not only added veteran leadership to a scoring line of young stars they also picked up an enforcer to keep those stars protected. Looking to make a deep run in this year’s NHL playoff’s the Penguins nabbed forward Gary Roberts from the Florida Panthers and Georges Laraque from the Phoenix Coyotes before the trade deadline hit.

Roberts will not only complement the scoring trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal but more importantly offer experience when the playoffs arrive. The Penguins sent defenseman Noah Welch to the Panthers for Roberts in hopes he will lighten the load on Mark Recchi when it comes to leadership.

Laraque offers the Penguins a solid enforcer who won’t allow opposing teams to tee off on Crosby, Malkin and Stall without serious repercussions. Pittsburgh traded Daniel Carcillo and a low-round draft pick for Laraque’s nearly 900 penalty minutes in 546 career games.

The Penguins also sent forward Dominic Moore to the Minnesota Wild for a third-round draft pick.
