Human Genome Sciences (NASDAQ:HGSI) was the most active gainer as it rallied 35.28% to $25.28 on massive volume of 40.70 million shares after today HGSI and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announced positive results from BLISS-76, the second of two large-scale phase III clinical trials of BENLYSTA™ (belimumab) for treating systemic lupus. A full presentation of results from BLISS-52 was recently shared at the 73rd Annual Scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology. Both trials succeeded in meeting their primary endpoints, which should make BENLYSTA eligible for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The stock price made a new 52 week high of $26.21.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ:VRTX) climbed 7.72% or $2.59 to $36.15 on 9.22 million shares after it said a Phase II study showed that twice-daily use of its experimental hepatitis C treatment telaprevir was comparable to three-times a day. The dosing change could increase patient convenience and give a competitive advantage versus others developing new therapies. Vertex expects to file for approval in the second half of 2010. The stock hit a two-year high of $38.68.

Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR) was one of the most active gainers on huge volume. The stock climbed 5.69% to close at $47.70 on an unusual volume of 2.87 million shares. The stock made an intraday high of $47.82 and an intraday low of $45.76 respectively. Dollar Tree, Inc. (Dollar Tree), formerly Dollar Tree Stores, Inc., is an operator of discount variety stores offering merchandise at the fixed price of one dollar. At January 31, 2009, the Company operated 3,591 discount variety retail stores in 48 states.
