Holding Suppliers Accountable

It’s not just those who do illegal drugs who face legal issues.

You don’t have to do drugs for these substances to get you in trouble. In recent years it has become more common for law enforcement to hold suppliers responsible when drug use goes wrong.

Recently a Wisconsin man was arrested for providing drugs to another man who later died of an overdose. The death of 26-year-old Tyler Bares was determined to be the result of a heroin or cocaine overdose. Local officials at the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office then arrested 30-year-old Mack Scott who provided drugs to Bares. Scott was charged with first degree reckless homicide, conspiracy to deliver heroin, conspiracy to deliver cocaine, delivery of heroin and delivery of cocaine.

While the case is still pending, the arrest sends a clear message. There’s been much debate about the practice of criminalizing addiction, as many treatment professionals suggest that this doesn’t lead to individuals getting help for their problem. It stigmatizes the addicted and offers punishment instead of treatment. Attitudes toward those who supply the drugs are less sympathetic. Most have no problem holding them criminally responsible for their role in overdose incidents or deaths.
