German Chancellor Angela Merkel Addresses U.S. Congress

German Chancellor Angela Merkel delivered an historic address before both houses of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday, calling on a greater concentration on fighting global warming as well as preventing the development of nuclear weapons in Iran.

Merkel became just the second German chancellor to speak before the U.S. Congress, the only other being Konrad Adenauer in 1957.

In her address Merkel stressed the importance of combating climate change, stating there was “no time to lose” and a binding obligation must be signed by European nations and the U.S. as it would influence other countries like China and India.

Merkel also voiced her support for the U.S call to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, calling for a “zero tolerance” policy concerning the issue. On the issue Merkel said, “A nuclear bomb in the hands of an Iranian president who denies the Holocaust, threatens Israel and denies Israel the right to exist, is not acceptable.”

Perhaps the most controversial issue that Merkel addressed was concerning Afghanistan. The German chancellor said her country would work with the U.S. and “travel this road together, every step of the way.” While Merkel pledged that support the German people have expressed an unwillingness to support the Afghan initiative.
