Prescription drug abuse fills
press headlines. Celebrity names like
Michael Jackson, who died of overdose according to preliminary findings of the
LA coroner, along with Anna Nicole Smith, DJ AM and Actor Heath Ledger all died
of prescription drug overdoses. With this many recent well known prescription
drug deaths, it would seem of some importance for us to have a better awareness
of the dangers of prescription drug
abuse.
Prescription drugs are more
and more mass marketed with encouragement to get drugs with the often chimed
phrase, "Ask your doctor, if (the now advertised drug) is right for
you". As a result, doctors are more
and more looked to not so much as healers but as purveyors of medical drugs.
Celebrities, Actors, Athletes also promote drugs in various ways, if merely by
the fact it's promoted to our youth that they take drugs.
The celebrities above as well
as other stellar names, like radio show host Rush Limbaugh, who also battled
prescription addiction, didn't start out seeking to get hooked. So what is
addiction and how does one get hooked?
According to Narconon Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation and
Education Centers, addiction is defined as a condition characterized by
repeated, compulsive seeking and use of drugs, alcohol or other similar substances
despite adverse social, mental and physical consequences.
Many drugs today are
extremely addictive and in many cases, the cycle of addiction begins with a
problem, discomfort or some form of emotional or physical pain.
“In every patient we see, there
is some type of problem or issue that has led them into the addiction in the
first place,” says Erica Catton Director of Promotion for Narconon. “But the mechanics behind it is
that by helping to bring these problems to the surface and giving the person
skills to handle them, they then won’t have to go back to using drugs as a
solution to a problem. They can be free from addiction."
