Erin Brockovich-Ellis, a legal advocate and environmental activist who was portrayed by Julia Roberts in the 2000 movie Erin Brockovich, was arrested near Las Vegas last Friday for operating her boat under the influence of alcohol.
According to reports, the 52-year-old was attempting to dock her boat at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor on Lake Mead when a Nevada Department of Wildlife game warden noticed she was “struggling.” The warden detected signs of intoxication when he offered to assist her.
Brockovich-Ellis failed a breathalyzer test with a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit of .08 and was taken into custody for operating under the influence (OUI). She was released from the Clark County Detention Center after posting $1,000 bail.
In a statement released on Sunday, Brockovich-Ellis apologized for her actions. "At no time was the boat away from the dock and there was no public safety risk. That being said, I take drunk driving very seriously, this was clearly a big mistake. I know better and I am very sorry,” she said. "After a day in the sun and with nothing to eat it appears that a couple of drinks had a greater impact than I realized."
