Turner Construction Company was selected to perform construction management services of the new Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy – a year-round youth development program committed to preparing youth with the skills necessary to succeed in life and to become responsible, productive citizens in their communities.
Located only a few miles from Nationals Park, the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy is in Ward 7’s Fort Dupont Park on a nine-acre campus that was secured through the cooperation of the D.C. and Federal governments. The facility will include three AstroTurf fields designed to accommodate baseball and softball competition from youth through college-level play. Additionally, a state-of-the-art 18,000 SF, two story educational clubhouse with classrooms, office space, meeting rooms, a teaching kitchen (suitable for cooking and nutrition lessons) and an indoor training facility. This building, designed by Devrouax & Purnell, is slated to receive a LEED® Silver rating upon completion in the fall of 2013.
Designed with sensitivity to the needs of low-income youth in a dense, urban community, the Academy’s programs will emphasize literacy and math education along with physical and emotional wellness for its scholar-athletes. Baseball and softball themes will be infused in the academic curriculum in support of the on-the-field instruction taking place every day.
“Our community is mentally and emotionally invested in our local professional baseball team, and Turner is excited to use the momentum to shape and enrich the lives of the District’s youth. It is an honor to partner with the Washington Nationals and the D.C. Government to make this dream a reality,” said Jeff Burnham, Turner’s Vice President and General Manager of the Special Projects Division.
