Antonella Barba Takes a Hit on American Idol; Women’s Top Ten Perform

Antonella Barba has been through a lot this past week. She has been the subject of some nasty criticism over photos that have surfaced on the internet, some not even her. On Wednesday she had her chance to take the stage and for a few minutes remind people why she was on America Idol. After her performance it became apparent that her pictures are more appealing than her voice.

Like many contestants on American Idol, Barba opted to sing a song that she’s not capable of singing. Selecting a Celine Dion song is fine if your Celine Dion but not if your Anotella Barba. By not selecting a song a little less difficult than “Because You Loved Me” Barba has put herself on the chopping block. If she survives its not because of her voice.

While many people were tuning in to Wednesday’s show to watch Barba there were nine other contestants that were taking the stage as well. Like the guys from the night before the dedications were to the usual suspects, i.e. grandparents, parents, friends and boyfriends.

Luckily for Barba there will be a few other singers looking at a possible exit for singing songs that shouldn’t be it their arsenal. Leslie Hunt dedicated Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” to her late grandfather and it didn’t remind anybody of Nina Simone. Gina Glocksen belted out “Alone” from Heart as a dedication to her boyfriend. It shouldn’t be long before she is back by his side. Alaina Alexander is on the hot seat after her rendition of the Dixie Chicks’ “I’m Not Ready to Make Nice.” Dedicating the tune to her mother, it appeared as if Alexander wasn’t ready to make an impression. Haley Scarnato dedicated “Queen of the Night” to her fiancé and it was rather apparent that American Idol wouldn’t be interfering with her wedding plans.

While none of the women’s performances were atrocious, there was clearly a defining line between the very good and the not as good. Lakisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle, Jordin Sparks, Stephanie Edwards, and Sabrina Sloan all sounded like they belonged in the competition.

It will be interesting to see if Barba survives the cut, luckily for her she has company on the chopping block.
