Former Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah has called the country’s recent declaration that President Hamid Karzai has won re-election “illegal” and said the new government would lack legitimacy due to widespread fraud throughout the voting process.
Karzai had been declared the winner following the first round of voting but an investigation by the UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) revealed massive fraud in the balloting and nearly a third of Karzai’s votes were tossed.
After those votes were tossed Karzai fell below the 50 percent mark necessary to avoid a run-off and a second round was called. As a condition for the second round Abdullah insisted the election officials who oversaw the first round be dismissed yet Karzai balked at those demands and as a result Abdullah dropped his name from the election.
That announcement led to Karzai’s re-election but Abdullah has said the new government would lack legitimacy and would not have the strength to fight corruption and terrorism. Abdullah has already ruled out any possibility of joining a unity government or serving in Karzai’s cabinet, saying he would focus on pursuing his agenda and promoting change.
