World Series News: Philadelphia Phillies Look to Stay Alive, Send Pedro Martinez to the Hill to Face Andy Pettitte and New York Yankees in Game 6

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to force a Game 7 on Wednesday night and they’ll be placing their faith in Pedro Martinez as the 38-year-old right-hander takes the mound to face the New York Yankees and their elder statesman, 37-year-old lefty Andy Pettitte.

Martinez looked strong in his Game 2 World Series appearance, tossing six innings and striking out eight but home runs from Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui were enough to sink the Phillies 3-1 and even the series at 1-1.

Pettitte pitched for the Yankees in Game 3 as the series shifted to Philadelphia and the future Hall of Famer managed to pick up the win despite a shaky outing in which he gave up four runs and walked three in six innings.

Now Pettitte will be called on to pick up the Yankees 27th World Series title but he’ll be pitching on three-day’s rest, something he hasn’t done for some time. On the other side of the field Martinez is returning to the mound after regular rest and should be ready to go.

The wildcard could be how well the bullpens pitch in the game as neither starter is expected to go further than six innings. New York’s middle relief has struggled this postseason but when the ball gets to closer Mariano Rivera its lights out. It’s been the other way around for Philadelphia as their middle relief has been serviceable while the closing of the game has been a bit problematic.

It won’t be all about pitching on Wednesday night as there are plenty of stories to follow from both teams. Offensively there has been just as much talk about Teixeira’s terrible series as there has been about Alex Rodriguez and his postseason resurgence. Teixeira has just two hits and two RBIs in 19 at-bats.

Philly has their own concerns with their slugger as Ryan Howard has been a shade worse than awful, collecting three hits in 19 at-bats and striking out a World Series record-tying 12 times.

While Howard would set a new World Series record with one more strike out Chase Utley can set a new record for home runs in a World Series as the Phillies second baseman is sitting on five longballs. Utley has six hits in the World Series with a double the only one not to leave the yard.

Game time for Game 6 of the World Series is set for 7:57 p.m. ET
