Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has been appointed a lawyer by the United Nations war crimes court handling his genocide trial in The Hague.
Karadzic had insisted on defending himself before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and insisted he be given another ten months to prepare for his trial yet that request was denied. Instead, the court opted to appoint Karadzic a lawyer but did adjourn his genocide trial to March 1.
Karadzic stands accused of a number of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Bosnian conflict in the 1990s. He was originally indicted in 1995 but fled before authorities could apprehend him. Karadzic then spent the next 13 years on the run before being captured in Belgrade in 2008.
More than 100,000 people died during the Bosnian conflict and Karadzic is being blamed for orchestrating a large portion of those deaths.
