Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas Won’t Seek Re-Election

According to officials from the Palestinian Liberation Organization President Mahmoud Abbas has said he will not seek re-election when polls open in January of next year.

Abbas was elected president of the Palestinian Authority in 2005 following the death of Yasser Arafat but since that time he has struggled to forge a lasting peace with Israel and continues to be challenged by Hamas.

While Abbas appears determined to exit his office the PLO is said to be trying to change his mind, saying they would still support him in the January 24 election.
