A Kansas-based company recalled more than 22,737 pounds of ground beef after a test for E. coli O157:H7 came back positive. There have been no cases of E. coli poisoning linked to the recalled products so far.
National Beef Packing Co., which is located in Liberal, Kansas, said the affected products were produced on May 25 and later distributed to military commissaries, food service distributors and retail stores. They all have a “Use By/Freeze By” date of June 14, 2013.
The recall includes:
10 lb. packages of "National Beef" 81/19 Coarse Ground Beef, package code "0421."
10 lb. packages of "National Beef" 80/20 Coarse Ground Chuck, package code "0481."
10 lb. packages of "National Beef" 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck, package code "0484."
“This recall is voluntary, and there have been no reported illnesses related to the recall. We are working closely with authorities to investigate this matter and are contacting our customers who have purchased this product,” National Beef said in a statement.
U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service released a statement saying, “E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days, on average) after exposure to the organism.”
