Brad Pitt: I’m “Gutted” By James Gandolfini’s Death

Brad Pitt is one of the latest stars to weigh in on the tragic death of James Gandolfini. On Thursday, Pitt told reports he is “gutted by this loss.” Pitt and Gandolfini starred together in True Romance, The Mexican, and most recently Killing The Softly.

"I admire Jimmy as a ferocious actor, a gentle soul and a genuinely funny man,” Pitt said. “I am fortunate to have sat across the table from him and am gutted by this loss. I wish his family strength and some semblance of peace.”

Italian authorities announced Friday that Gandolfini, 51, died of a heart attack. The Sopranos star was in Rome for a short vacation with family before he attended the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily this weekend. He collapsed in his room at the Boscolo Exedra hotel Wednesday night and was found by his 13-year-old son Michael. Gandolfini had stopped breathing by the time he reached the hospital and attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Gandolfini’s spokesperson says the actor’s body will be flown back to the United States as soon as Italian authorities clear the move. "Once we have the clearance, we will put him on a flight to America. We expect that to be Wednesday, maybe Thursday, but we will keep you informed,” he said, adding that the funeral will hopefully happen “on Thursday, Friday, latest Saturday” in NYC.
