Headquartered in London, UK, Barclays Plc is a major global financial services provider and the second-biggest bank in Britain. Yesterday, CEO John Varley stood in London’s Trafalgar Square and told the crowd that “profit is not satanic”.
Varley’s speech comes just weeks after Goldman Sachs International advisor Brian Griffiths’ proclamation in St. Paul’s Cathedral: “The injunction of Jesus to love others as ourselves is an endorsement of self-interest”.
As bonus season rapidly approaches and world governments tighten their grip on major financial institutions, bankers are invoking the word of the Lord: “Is Christianity and banking compatible? Yes,” Varley said in an interview after his speech in Trafalgar Square, “And is Christianity and fair reward compatible? Yes.” In 2008, Varley was paid $1.77 million and no bonus.
Varley also said in his speech that banks are “backbone” of the economy.
