Shaquille O’Neal finished with 31 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Miami Heat (29-29) past the Detroit Pistons (36-20) 85-82.
For a while it looked as if the Heat would have little problems with the Pistons as they dominated the first half and went to the locker room with a 50-31 lead. That changed dramatically when the Pistons came out in the second half and cut into the lead to four by the end of the third.
The Pistons then continued to play solid in the fourth and grabbed the lead with just over three-minutes remaining in the game but O’Neal was determined to show he could still be the most dominant player in the league. With spin moves and raw strength O’Neal continued to muscle his way to the basket and provide the needed basket for the Heat.
With just under 40 seconds remaining in the game Shaq put the Heat up for good with a dunk and Miami improved to 3-2 since Dwyane Wade went down with a shoulder injury.
Antoine Walker assisted Shaq out on the offensive end, adding 22 points in the win.
The Heat got a lot of help from Detroit’s awful night shooting from the floor. The Pistons were just 1-16 from beyond the three-point arch and finished the night shooting 36 percent from the floor.
