A private, invitation-only wake for James Gandolfini was held Wednesday night in New Jersey ahead of Thursday’s public service in New York. According to reports, the actor’s widow and 9-month-old daughter were among the first family members to arrive at Robert Spearing Funeral Home in Park Ridge. Deborah Lin and baby Liliana were shielded by large umbrellas as they made their way inside.
About 18 police officers with the local Park Ridge Police were stationed around the funeral home for security, but no incidents were reported. "It's been somewhat uneventful, which is what we hoped ... we asked people to respect the family and overall people heeded that," Capt. Joseph Rampolla said.
The private service ended around 9 p.m.
Gandolfini died suddenly in Rome on Wednesday, June 19. His 13-year-old son Michael found him stricken but still breathing in his hotel room. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined Gandolfini had suffered a heart attack. The Sopranos star was 51-years-old.
