Ruben Studdard is headed back to reality TV. The season 2 American Idol winner is completing on NBC’s weight loss competition show The Biggest Loser in an effort to beat his obesity once and for all.
The 35-year-old has been very open about his weight issues. He previously spoke about about participating in a weight loss program at Duke University in 2006 and becoming a vegan.
“On both sides of my family, I have a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure and things of that nature. I just wanted to basically combat those issues at an early age. They’ve never been an issue for me, but I wanted to do it while I was still young, and felt like working out and looking great,” he said in a 2006 Today show interview.
“So I basically had to change my thinking and as it pertains to the foods I wanted to eat. (Duke) put me on a 1,200 to 1,500 calorie diet a day. It ended up being pretty easy,” he said.
Studdard, aka the Velvet Teddy Bear, lost weight and kept the pounds off until his 4 year marriage to Surata Zuri McCants ended last year.
The 15th season of The Biggest Loser premieres on Tuesday, October 8 at 8 p.m.
