Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pick Up Jeff Garcia

On the same day that the Denver Broncos announced that they had traded quarterback Jake Plummer to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a fourth-round draft pick in this years draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they had signed veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia.

Garcia was signed to a two-year contract that will pay him $5 million in the first season and could bring him $14.5 over the deal if he hits certain benchmarks. Those targets include winning the starting position in both seasons and carrying the Buccaneers to the playoffs both seasons.

Stepping in for the injured Donovan McNabb last year, Garcia led a 5-6 Philadelphia Eagles squad to the divisional playoffs where they narrowly lost to the New Orleans Saints. Garcia finished the season with 10 touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Sources close to Plummer have said that the 10-year veteran will retire rather than play for a team that won’t guarantee a starting spot. The Bucs refused to offer such a promise, making the deal with the Broncos appear dead.
