After dealing with Bryden’s decision to leave and Ben’s bad reputation, Desiree Hartsock was ready to leave drama behind and have a fun set of dates in Barcelona, Spain. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding James and a secret conversation he had with Mikey about hoping to become the next Bachelor boiled over as soon as Desiree and her 8 bachelors reached Spain.
Drew gets the first one-on-one date and is faced with the task of letting Des in on James’ intentions. They spend the day exploring Barcelona before enjoying a romantic dinner. Drew shares intimate details about his life, like his father’s past alcohol abuse and current cancer battle, and Des loves that he can open up and share his feelings. After she presents him with the date rose, Drew broaches the James problem. Des doesn’t like what she hears, but she appreciates Drew and the other guys looking out for her.
Des later decides to not make any decisions until she speaks with James. She invites him on the group date along with Brooks, Kasey, Chris, Michael, and Juan Pablo. The group makes their way to RCD Espanyol De Barcelona stadium for a game of soccer against Des and professional women players. At the cocktail party later, Des pulls Chris aside to read a poem she wrote about them. Meanwhile, the guys confront James about telling Mikey that he could become the next Bachelor if he could just make it to the final 4. The guys also accuse James of making plans with Mikey to hook up with girls on a boat after the show is over. James loses his temper and claims that Mikey was the one to started the conversation. He also insists that there is nothing wrong with him thinking about a future without Des. The guys disagree and are convinced James will be sent packing when Des pulls him aside to confront him. Instead of sending him home, Des decides to think about the situation.
The last one-on-one goes to Zak. Des and Zak embrace the local art culture by visiting a studio to sketch different subjects, including a nude male model. Over dinner, Zak opens up about his parents’ 30-year marriage and his desire for a wife that shares his adventurous spirit. Des gives Zak the date rose.
Des pulls James aside again with the intention of sending him home, but she changes her mind again when he tears up and sounds sincere about wanting to stay and build a relationship. The guys can’t believe James escaped the ax again, but they are hopeful that Des won’t give him a rose at the rose ceremony. Their wish is granted – James is sent packing along with Juan Pablo and Kasey.
