Dan Persa rushed for 67 yards on 17 carries and completed 6/10 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown, Scott Concannon carried the ball 16 times and collected 61 yards and the defense of the Northwestern Wildcats (6-4) forced four turnovers in a stunning 17-10 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes (9-1) on Saturday.
Iowa looked like they would dominate from the outset as they jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first minute of the game following a 74-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Stanzi to Marvin McNutt and four minutes later they extended their lead to 10-0 on a 39-yard field goal from Daniel Murray.
While the Wildcats had a terrible first quarter they managed to put that behind them in the second and when Corey Wootton sacked Stanzi and forced a fumble Nwest Marshall Thomas recovered in the endzone and Northwestern closed the gap to 10-7. The hit not only cost Iowa points also their quarterback as Stanzi was knocked out of the game with a high-ankle sprain.
With Stanzi out the Hawkeyes offense stalled and Northwestern took advantage, grabbing the lead 14-10 on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Persa to Drake Dunsmore late in the second quarter.
Neither team could put points on the board but the Wildcats added a 47-yard field goal from Stefan Demos early in the fourth and the Hawkeyes offense had no answers. The loss likely cost Iowa a shot at a BCS national championship and could still cost them the Big Ten title.
