Members of Iraq’s parliament have approved key election law reforms that are expected to keep the country in line for January’s nation polls.
Following weeks of delays and deadlocks parliamentary members finally agreed on several critical issues that are seen as stabilizers in the country’s upcoming elections. Among the issues ironed out in the vote was how candidates would be listed on ballot papers as well as the distribution of seats in the ethnically divided city of Kirkuk.
Resolving the issues was seen as paramount in avoiding further delays in the national polls and gaining the endorsement of the United Nations. In the end 141 of the 196 MPs present for the vote approved the reforms.
