Somali Pirates Launch Attack on Oil Tanker more than 1,000 Nautical Miles Off Coast

Somali pirates have expanded their reach in attacks, moving 1,000 nautical miles off the coast to target a Hong Kong-registered oil tanker.

While the BW Lion came under attack from two pirate skiffs the crew managed to escape the attackers who used automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades to try and capture the vessel. The captain of the BW Lion was able to increase speed and used evasive measures to escape the pirates.

The attack is said to be the furthest attack launched by the Somali pirates, indicating they were changing their tactics and focusing on targets further out in the Indian Ocean,
