The Dow Jones reached a 52-week-high Monday; the result of gains in the materials and industrial sectors. The industrial average shot up 147.29 points or 1.47% to make for an intraday high of 10170.71
The gains were led by a 3.9% increase for General Electric and a 3.5% climb for Caterpillar. American Express, Intel and Travelers also contributed to the market climb, gaining more than 2% each.
Investors have shrunk from riskier stocks in recent weeks, after bold attempts to revive the market resulted in continued losses since March. The trend has been reversed this week as investors return to the more daring investments that have characterized much of this year.
Experts predict investors will be more selective with the stocks they choose to buy after declines in recent weeks have discouraged unrestrained investment.
