Fort Hood Shooter Major Nidal Malik Hasan Regains Consciousness, able to Talk

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the 39-year-old army psychiatrist suspected of shooting dead 13 people and injuring another 29 at the Fort Hood military base in Killeen, Texas, has regained consciousness and is now able to talk.

Hasan is said to be in critical but stable condition after being shot several times by a police officer who responded to the initial gunfire.

Authorities have not released a motive for Hasan’s attack but some reports have suggested he was unhappy about his impending deployment to Afghanistan. Hasan is said to be a devout Muslim and had been critical of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Early reports after the shooting indicated that Hasan had been killed by police but he had in fact slipped into a coma and was placed on a ventilator. On Saturday he was taken off that ventilator and has been able to breathe on his own since.
