It's Not Just College Students That Need Lessons In Failure

Not only college students need lessons in failure says the head of one of the country's leading character development programs. Students in high school and middle school also need to learn that failure is an important step toward long-term success according to Bobbi DePorter, president of SuperCamp and Quantum Learning Network.

Ms. DePorter has been teaching this lesson to students for 28 years at her
summer enrichment camps. Failure Leads to Success is one of her 8 Keys of Excellence, eight character principles to live by, that she developed by analyzing the character traits of many successful people from several walks of life.

Students in Ms. DePorter's pre-teen and
teen summer camps learn that everyone from Thomas Edison to Michael Jordan experienced failure along the way, but that they didn't stop pursuing their dreams and goals when they failed. Instead, they just kept going.

"One of the main reasons we teach life skills in addition to learning skills at SuperCamp is because students are not robots," said Ms. DePorter. "They're human beings with emotions and they need to learn how to overcome failure, criticism, and fear."

Ms. DePorter also reaches students through Quantum Learning school programs and through her newly-launched Communities of Excellence character education program operated by the non-profit organization of which she is president, Learning Forum International.

Her programs have shown remarkable results over the years. A study with over 6,000 graduates from her
academic summer camps revealed that 73 percent of students reported increased grades, 68 percent reported increased motivation, and over 80 percent reported increased confidence and self-esteem.
