Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has announced he is battling cancer. Abdul-Jabbar,
one of basketball’s greatest players, revealed Tuesday morning that he was
diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia a year ago.
With treatment, Abdul-Jabbar, 62, is expected to live a
full and active life. The Los Angeles Lakers coach says he decided to take his
disease public after learning many patients don’t take their medication regularly
and skip doctor’s appointments.
“I’m telling my story to encourage fellow patients to
take charge of their health. Work closely with your doctor, monitor you disease
and, above all, take you medicine,” he said.
Abdul-Jabbar won 5 championships with the Lakers before
his retirement in 1989. He is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and won a
record 6 Most Valuable Player Awards. Abdul-Jabbar has served as a special assistant
coach for the Lakers since 2005.
