Randy Travis’ condition took a turn for the worse Wednesday night just hours after doctors said he was showing signs of improvement. A rep for the country music legend says Travis underwent emergency brain surgery after suffering a stroke. The surgery relieved pressure on his brain.
"As a complication of his congestive heart failure, Mr. Randy Travis has suffered a stroke and is currently undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain," the rep said in a statement. "He is out of surgery and remains in critical condition.”
No other details were available. After Travis was rushed to a Texas hospital on Sunday, it was determined that the 54-year-old was suffering from viral cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Viral cardiomyopathy is a condition in which a virus infects the heart, causing the heart muscle to weaken and enlarge. Travis’ treatment included the implantation of a device that helps pump blood through the heart.
Earlier on Wednesday, one of the physicians treating Travis at Heart Hospital Baylor Plano in Texas said the singer was doing better. “His condition has stabilized and he has shown signs of improvement. On behalf of his Mr. Travis’s family, friends and associates, we would like to express our extreme gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support that Mr. Travis has received,” said Dr. Michael Mack.
