Turkish Government to Announce Peaceful Plan to End Conflict with PKK

The Turkish government is set to announce a plan designed to end more than 25 years of conflict with the PKK (Kurdistan Worker’s Party).

More than 40,000 deaths have been attributed to the conflict in a predominantly Kurdish area in south-east Turkey. The PKK has been fighting for autonomy and while Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan doesn’t appear ready to grant full independence his new plan is expected to include the restoration of Kurdish place names, education in the Kurdish language and the use of Kurdish in election campaigns.

Turkey has long considered the PKK a terrorist organization as it has launched several rebel attacks against government buildings. Many of the Kurdish rebels have taken refuge in the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region and frequently cross the border to carry out hit-and-run attacks.
