French Aid Worker Abducted by Gunmen in Chad

A French aid worker employed by the International Committee of the Red Cross has been kidnapped by a number of gunmen in eastern Chad.

According to the ICRC Laurent Maurice was abducted late Monday in the village of Kawa but a motive for the abduction has not been released. As a result of the abduction the ICRC has temporarily suspended operations in the area.

The ICRC said Maurice was an agronomist and had been in the village to assess the crop production and examine the soil.

A second Frenchman working for the ICRC, Gauthier Lefevre, was abducted in Darfur in late October and remains held by his captures.
