Germany Goalkeeper Robert Enke Killed in Train Accident

Germany’s national football team is mourning the loss of Robert Enke after the 32-year-old goalkeeper was struck and killed by a train.

Enke became Germany’s number one keeper following the retirement of Jens Lehmann in 2008 and was expected to be starting for the Germans in the 2010 World Cup. He had missed his country’s last four matches due to a virus but returned to his club team, Hannover 96, this past weekend.

Upon learning of Enke’s death the German football federation (DFB) released a statement saying “We are all shocked, we are speechless.”

Enke leaves behind a wife and an eight-month-old daughter the couple adopted earlier this year.
