After a setback last week, Randy Travis is on the road to recovery. The country singer’s condition has once against stabilized and he is now “awake and alert, interacting with his family and friends and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy,” his doctor Gary Erwin said in a video update from The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano in Texas. Erwin said the next step is weaning the 54-year-old off of the breathing ventilator.
Travis was first hospitalized on July 7 for viral cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Viral cardiomyopathy is a condition in which a virus infects the heart, causing the heart muscle to weaken and enlarge. Travis’ treatment included the implantation of a device that helps pump blood through the heart.
Last Wednesday, the singer’s condition took a turn for the worse when he suffered a stroke. Doctors performed surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
In Tuesday’s video update, Travis fiancé thanked fans for their continued support. "He feels the hands of the doctors and the care of the nurses and the love of his fans. His friends and family have all been touched by that. He is responding well to voices and he sees and he understands. He's miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago,” said Mary Davis.
