American Idol may have heard Antonella Barba sing for the last time after Wednesday’s performance. Of course she would get the opportunity to screech out one more tune as a farewell but other than that it could be off to Girls Gone Wild after the public vote is revealed on Thursday.
The 20-year-old Point Pleasant, N.J. native was once again unimpressive while covering Corinne Bailey Rae's “Put Your Records On” and unless sympathy plays a role the internet’s most popular search could be fading into obscurity.
Barba does have one thing on her side, that being a large contingent of supporters. She has made it this far and whether it was for her voice or for pictures that have surfaced on the internet she does have a solid backing.
Anybody that watches American Idol and views it as a talent show would know that Barba doesn’t have the voice that would carry her past the likes of Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle. That being said she does have that intangible quality that could carry her much deeper into the competition. Fortunately for Barba none of the other singers are on par with Jones or Doolittle, so it’s almost as if it doesn’t matter who stays or goes they won’t surpass either of them.
Simon Cowell told Barba, “You’ve gone as far as you can go” after her performance on Wednesday and if this was a talent competition he may be right. But as reality television has proven over the years, it’s rarely about talent. The truth is, if Barba makes it into the Top 6 and gets to compete against the guys she may just stick around for awhile. The nothingness that exists on that side of the American Idol fence should be picked off once the competition opens up.
So Antonella Barba is now at that defining point. If she can sneak past the voters just once more she will have her voice on an American Idol cd and in all likelihood make it through to the Top 10 contestants and earn a spot on the American Idol tour.
