Roy Hibbert Scored 14 points and Jeff Green added 12 points and 8 rebounds as the Georgetown Hoyas (24-6) beat the Villanova Wildcats (22-10) 62-57.
This was probably the scenario that was supposed to be acted out back in 1985 when the Georgetown Hoyas met the Villanova Wildcats in the NCAA Championship game. While that heavily favored, Patrick Ewing led, team fell in one of the greatest upsets in NCAA Tournament history the 2006-07 Hoyas unearthed the dated script and pounded the Wildcats in their opening game of the Big East Tournament.
Georgetown jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the first half and then established a 26-2 advantage with 9:30 remaining before settling for a 37-18 lead at the break. Villanova missed their first nine shots from the field while Georgetown was able to mix in long-range jumpers with easy buckets in the paint to shoot 57 percent in the opening frame.
Villanova was able to start the second half on an 11-2 run and cut the deficit to ten but they were clearly a beaten team. The Wildcats were able to knock the Hoyas lead down to five in the final seconds but the final score didn’t indicate how thoroughly dominant Georgetown played.
The Wildcats may be holding their breath when the announcements are made for the NCAA Tournament. Their selection could rest on how the other conference tournaments play out. Villanova had a 9-7 record in the Big East this year, good enough for an eighth place finish in the 16 school field.
The Hoyas are playing for a high seed in the March Madness affair. Georgetown advanced to the Big East semifinals and will take on the winner of the Notre Dame-Syracuse game being played on Thursday. A Big East Tournament win could land them a number two seed when the NCAA Tournament is announced.
