U.S. President Barack Obama Meeting with National Security Team to Discuss Afghanistan Strategy

U.S. President Barack Obama is meeting with his national security team to discuss the nation’s strategy concerning Afghanistan.

According to a White House spokesman Obama is considered four options for the U.S. military but what those options are have not been made known. Obama has voiced support for a troop increase in Afghanistan but exact details surrounding those numbers have not been released.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, has called for an increase of at least 40,000 U.S. troops to effectively carry out the mission. Many reports have suggested that while Obama appears committed to a troop increase the figure would not be as high as McChrystal proposed.

While an increase in troop presence is a seemingly foregone conclusion the exact mission of those troops is not as clear. It has been said the focus would turn from hunting Taliban militants to providing protection and training within the country.

A decision on troop levels is expected to be made within the next few days.
