Irish Priest Held Captive in Philippines Freed

One month after Fr. Michael Sinnott was abducted by gunmen from his office in Pagadian on Mindanao island in the Philippines the 79-year-old Irish priest has been released by his captures.

Fr. Sinnott was seized from his office on October 11 and while a $2 million ransom demand was reportedly made by his captures, reportedly the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Irish government insisted no ransom was paid.

Instead, according to Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin, Sinnott’s release had been the result of “a major diplomatic effort by the Irish and Filipino governments.”
