Chimp Victim Charla Nash Opens Up About Attack on Oprah

Charla Nash, the Connecticutt women who was mauled by her friend’s pet chimpanzee in February, spoke out for the first time since the attack on Wednesday’s Oprah Winfrey Show. Nash sat down with Oprah for an interview at Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic where she is being treated.

“I don’t remember the attack,” said Nash, whose mouth, nose, ears and hands were ripped off by the 200-pound chimp.

“I don’t want to [remember]…I want to get healthy. I don’t want to wake up with nightmares,” she explains.

Doctors were able to reattach one of her thumps. Both of Nash’s eyes had to be removed and her face remains severely disfigured.

The attack took place outside the home of Nash’s friend Sandra Herold, the owner of the chimp Travis. On February 16 Herold called Nash to help her get Travis, 14, back into her house. Travis snapped and attacked Nash. Herold called 911 and police shot and killed Travis.

Nash now wears a veil to cover her face, telling Oprah she does it to avoid scaring people. “I'm the same person I've always been. I just look different. You know, and there's things that happen in life that, you know, you can't change it. You know, it's a tragedy,” she said.

Nash allowed Oprah to remove the veil and show her face to the public for the first time.

Nash and her family are suing Herold for $50 million and the state of Connecticut for $150 million for not having picked up on warning signs.
