Newt Gingrich admitted on a Christian radio station that he was carrying on an affair while attempting to have then president Bill Clinton impeached during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
Gingrich is considering a presidential bid in the 2008 elections and felt it was appropriate to admit his past transgressions. The former Speaker of the House had been one of the more out-spoken Republicans seeking to have Clinton impeached for his affair with Lewinsky in 1999.
During the radio interview with Dr. James Dobson, the 63-year-old Gingrich confessed that he had “fallen short of God’s standards” and was looking to move past that period of “weakness.”
Gingrich went on to say that his involvement in the impeachment of Clinton had more to do with the former President lying under oath about the Paula Jones scandal and Lewinsky affair and not the actual act.
