Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, along with four other men suspected of taking part in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, are being transferred from Guantanamo Bay to New York where they will appear in a civil court to answer to charges tied to the deadly events.
All five men had been facing prosecution at U.S. military commissions in Guantanamo but a controversial decision to move the case to civil court was made after President Barack Obama announced plans to shut down the detention facility.
Mohammed, believed to be the number three man in al-Qaeda, has already admitted he helped plan, finance and coordinate the attacks and planned on pleading guilty to all charges against him. While he has already offered an admission of guilt that could be thrown out of a civil court after evidence suggested he may have been subjected to water-boarding and other tactics used by investigators to gather information.
Those tactics may have also been used against the other suspects and many now fear that their admissions will be thrown out of a civil court, opening the possibility that some may walk free. This possibility is one reason why many families of victims have argued against the transfer of the suspects.
