Former baseball star Sammy Sosa denies reports he is
suffering from Vitiligo, a skin condition that causes depigmentation in patches
of skin. Sosa sparked rumors he had undergone facial bleaching to cover up the
condition when he appeared at the Grammy Latino awards with noticeably lighter
skin. Before and after pictures of Sosa then flooded the internet.
Sosa, 41, admits he is “a little surprised” at the
attention. The former Chicago Cubs star says he is simply using a cream for sun
damage from years of playing afternoon baseball games.
“I use a cream to keep my skin smooth and soft. I apply
it before I go to bed. When I was playing for Chicago all those years, I was in
the sun a lot for 1 o'clock games,” Sosa tells Univision in a two-part
interview. “The flashes (from the cameras) also made my skin look lighter. I'm
surprised with the controversy this has caused.”
Sosa began his Major League career in 1989 with the Texas
Rangers. He then played for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore
Orioles. He returned to the Rangers in 2007 and announced intentions to retire
in 2009.
